Legend has it that this dessert was born around 1490 when a young aristocrat, in love with the daughter of a Milanese baker, disguised himself as a baking apprentice and created this dessert to prove his love.
It was so successful that people began flocking to the bakery to ask for “Pan di Toni,” named after the young man, which eventually became known as Panettone.
